In the Middle Ages, the eardrums of portals can be carved with religious, biblical scenes. On the right of the central portal, is represented the last judgment. These representations allow religious teaching of the faithful, mainly illiterate. They also allow to supervise society in the Christian faith.

La cathédrale Notre Dame
Au Moyen Âge, les tympans des portails peuvent être sculptés de scènes religieuses, bibliques. Sur celui à droite du portail central, est représenté le Jugement Dernier. Ces représentations permettent l’enseignement religieux des fidèles, majoritairement analphabètes. Elles permettent également d’encadrer la société dans la foi chrétienne.
